When you would use this

PNG and JPG both turn a page into a picture, and which one is right depends entirely on what is on the page.

PNG is lossless and keeps edges sharp. That makes it the correct choice for anything with text, line drawings, tables or flat colour — a drawing sheet, a specification page, a logo. JPEG compresses by discarding detail around sharp transitions, which is exactly what letterforms and thin lines are made of, so a page of body text saved as JPG shows soft haloes around every character. Zoom in once and you cannot unsee it.

The cost is size. Lossless means nothing is thrown away, so a full page at print resolution runs to several megabytes where a JPG of the same page might be a few hundred kilobytes. For a photographic page — a scanned photograph, a rendering — JPG is both smaller and visually identical, and PNG is the wrong tool.

Transparency is the other reason to be here. A PDF page is transparent wherever nothing is printed, and PNG can store that. So a logo or a stamp exported this way arrives with an empty background rather than a white rectangle, and drops cleanly onto a coloured slide. That is why pages are not painted white by default, which is the opposite of what the JPG tool must do. Tick the white box only if the image is going somewhere dark and you want a page, not a cut-out.

One page becomes one file, so a long document produces a lot of downloads. If you only need a few, split them out first. And the result is a picture either way: the text stops being text, and nothing in it can be searched or copied afterwards.

Questions

PNG or JPG?
PNG for anything with text, line drawings or flat colour — it keeps edges sharp and can keep transparency. JPG for photographic pages, where it is far smaller. A page of body text as JPG shows fuzzy haloes around the letters.
Why is the background transparent and not white?
Because a PDF page is transparent wherever nothing is printed, and PNG can store that. It is the reason to choose PNG. Tick 'white background' if you are placing it somewhere dark.
Why are the files so large?
PNG is lossless — it throws nothing away. A full page at print resolution can run to several megabytes. Use Screen quality, or use JPG, if size matters more than fidelity.
Can I still search the text afterwards?
No. The result is a picture of the page. Use the extract text tool on the original if you need the words.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Pages are rendered inside your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
